Finding Aid complete!

After removing a billion more staples, I was finally able to finish up the finding aid.  A finding aid is a brief summary of the contents in a collection, giving you the  provenance, background, scope and organization of the contents, and list of folders.  The purpose of the finding aid is to help a researcher assess whether the collection might contain the information he’s looking for, before spending hours going through the individual papers.

I think the difficulty lies in saying everything that needs to be said, without writing too much.  I was trying to consider what information someone might be looking for, and to think of major keywords to give a good sense of the contents.

I’m not sure what my next collection project will be.  Next Friday will probably be  to digitizing and cataloging photographs.
